Adjusting to a new schedule and getting on top of all of the work college throws at you can be difficult at first, but after a few weeks, you’ll likely find you have some free time. Applying for a job on or around campus can be a great way to fill some of those free hours without adding too much stress to your schedule, and it may even be built into your financial aid through work study. Plus, everyone could use some pocket change for books and the occasional trip to Chipotle.

If you are eligible for work study through your FAFSA, you get paid through the federal government to work at Nazareth. But don’t fret if you aren’t eligible, because there are a lot of jobs on campus that you can apply to that accept non-work study workers.

Nazareth has so many job opportunities that can fit the schedules of its students, and there are even job fairs on campus (pictured at the top) at the beginning of each semester to aid in the job search. Also, Nazareth’s career counselors can help you set up a Handshake account. On Handshake you can add information about yourself, upload resume and portfolio materials, and easily apply online to work study and non-work study jobs on and off campus. You can even do searches for summer jobs and internships all around the country, and adding your personal information will target specific jobs that fit your skill set. Need help updating your resume to score a job? The Center for Life’s Work can help with that, and you can easily schedule an appointment on Handshake! Job listings, internship opportunities, and job fair events are all posted through Handshake, and many students find the app and the website to be helpful throughout their years at Nazareth.

Since Nazareth is located so close to Rochester, many job opportunities arise for students interested in working and volunteering in the community. For example, Partners for Learning and Partners for Serving are two job opportunities that involve civic engagement, including working at schools and other programs throughout Rochester. Working for Partners for Learning has given me an opportunity to work with elementary level students as a mentor and tutor at after school programs and has allowed me to build my leadership skills. Partners for Serving is very similar to Partners for Learning, the exception being that they often go off campus to different sites, like nursing homes or programs with refugees, rather than working at a school. Working in the community allows for Nazareth students to reach beyond the boundaries of campus and have real-world experiences with members of the community.

Even if your schedule is jam-packed and you can only work a couple hours a week, you’ll likely be able to find a job on campus, like working in the athletic center or the mailroom. College is a busy time and employers know that, so some on campus office or desk jobs do allow you to do coursework during a slow shift. Every job is different, and a great part of that is that you can choose a job that will interest you or allow you to gain much needed experience in your major. Do you like going to sporting events? Working for game management is a great way to make some money while still being able to enjoy the sports at Naz. Whether it be announcing softball games or keeping score of the volleyball tournaments, a game management position is a popular job on campus. If you did well in a class, you can apply, with a recommendation from your professor, to become a tutor. Students who are struggling can get the help they need to succeed, while you get too keep the content fresh in your mind and make a little extra money.

I you can’t find an on campus job that fits your needs and/or interests, Nazareth is walking distance to Pittsford Plaza where you can find numerous chain stores like Trader Joe’s, Wegman’s, Michael’s Craft Store, and a handful of restaurants college students often work at. There are many options in the area on and off campus that are always looking for great employees.

Working while attending Naz is a great way to get your name out in the workforce, help to build your resume, and open yourself to a world of opportunities beyond just your coursework. Although adding a job to a busy schedule may be a daunting thought, Nazareth’s career options are far and wide, and on campus employers are always willing to work with students to find something that fits your wants or needs.
