A semester in Washington, DC? I’ll take it! When I first heard about this semester-long opportunity to intern and earn credits while living in DC, I had to learn more. From an email with the subject line, “Intern in Washington, DC – Info Session TODAY!” sent from Center for Life’s Work to an application process, I’m officially moved in and getting settled at my internship site.

If it weren’t for me giving up just one lunch hour of my junior year to attend an informational meeting (there was free pizza, btw) based on this email, I wouldn’t be where I’m sitting right now — in an apartment one short metro ride away from DC.

Early into my undergraduate career, I understood my goals for what I wanted to get out of my undergraduate studies. Personally, I wanted to take my studies one step further by studying outside of the Nazareth College campus but didn’t necessarily want to be living in a different country. That’s why when I saw in that email I had the chance to study in DC regardless of my major/area of study, I had to take the opportunity while I still had the chance as a, then, upcoming senior.

I’ve been here for one week and I’ve already had experiences that I didn’t think I would have during my undergraduate studies. In one week, I’ve moved almost 400 miles away from Nazareth College (I miss you, Naz) and emerged myself into DC — meeting new students participating in the same program as me, indulging in the expansive restaurant scene, interning at a civil and human rights organization in the center of the city, attending and participating in rallies at Capitol Hill, and studying Global Women’s Leadership Development and Professional Development.

Whether you want to go across the ocean or just across state lines, Naz offers a variety of study abroad opportunities and makes it easy for students to find the perfect one for them. And, as if it couldn’t get placed in front of you anymore effortlessly, emails are sent out to Naz students as soon as a study abroad opportunity arises. To obtain more information about a specific opportunity, it’s important to attend an informational session if one is specified in an email, or you can always talk to your academic advisor or professors to see if they have new information or advice for you.

Studying abroad as a Nazareth College student won’t have a negative impact on your graduation status in terms of earning the right amount of credits to stay on track because this is something Naz is attentive to at all times. Just be sure to talk to your academic advisor about how to earn the credits you’ll need while studying abroad.
