The new year is the perfect time to build a new you! Many people use the new year to create goals, resolutions, and work on their ambitions. This new year, I created a bucket list for all the activities I would like to experience at Naz! I have already experienced some of these activities and held some of these positions during my freshman year, but I would definitely like to experience them again!

Attend Battle of the Beaks. Battle of the Beaks is an annual tradition at Nazareth College! The Nazareth College Men’s and Women’s basketball teams play against our down the street neighbor, St. John Fisher. Nazareth’s mascot is the golden flyer, while Fisher’s is the cardinal, hence the name, “Battle of the Beaks.” Admission is $5 and proceeds go towards a good cause: The Golisano Children’s Hospital. It’s an amazing event to experience with friends at Naz! Last year, I received a free ticket to attend the game from The Campus Activities Board (CAB) at Nazareth; they bought 100 tickets, and, on a given day, offered the first 100 students to show up a free ticket. Battle of the Beaks will take place on February 10, 2018, and I can’t wait to attend the game again!

Have an Internship Experience. As a second-year marketing major, I believe it is time to gain my first internship! One of the things I love about Naz is our Center for Life’s Work (CFLW) department. The CFLW helps students at Naz with many career oriented aspects from resume building to applying to grad schools. It also offers career coaches to the student body at Naz and has a coach assigned to each specific school on campus. My major, marketing, falls under the School of Management. Last semester, I sat down with Dale Leyburn, who oversees students of the SOM, to discuss internship options and Dale introduced me to Handshake, an online career management tool that helps students find full time and part time internships. Handshake will definitely make my internship seeking process much smoother! It’s amazing that the CFLW at Naz spends time with students to work on their personal career goals.

Gain a leadership position on campus. As of right now, I hold three leadership positions on campus; I am the treasurer for NCA (Nazareth’s Commuter Association), a Class of 2020 senator, and a Student Ambassador (tour guide). I would love to gain another leadership position on campus in 2018! One great way to get involved at Naz is joining student government or the Undergraduate Association Board. Elections for the undergraduate association occur each semester and information meetings are held each semester to inform students on the positions available. Each class has three senator positions as well as a president, vice president, treasurer and secretary. Class leaders work together to organize events for their respective class, and work on any concerns or issues fellow class members may face. Although I’m already very involved, I would love to take on more responsibilities in my current roles (or a new role entirely) in the new year!

Attend Winter Wonderland Winter Wonderland is just one of many fun events put on by the Campus Activities Board during winter, and is one many students look forward to! Winter Wonderland is a one day event that usually occurs in January. Rochester is known for its winter season, which is why this event is so special! Last year’s events included wagon rides, prizes and giveaways, a snow globe photo booth, and s’mores by the fire, to name a few. I was unable to attend last year, but definitely plan to attend this event in 2018!

Go Ice Skating! Nazareth’s location in Rochester makes it close to a variety of ice skating arenas. One of the most popular nearby places is Bill Gray’s Regional Iceplex. This is where the Naz Men’s hockey home games occur and many students stay afterwards to ice skate with their friends. It’s a great way to end a hockey game and I can’t wait to get on the ice myself!
