Even though tomorrow kicks off “spring” break, we’re still seeing a lot of winter weather here Naz.  When we’re in the midst of a deep and snowy freeze, it’s important to be prepared. Whether you’ve spent many a winters in Rochester weather and are used to it by now, or you’re weary of your first winter here, here’s some of my favorite winter weather survival gear that I’ve used over the years to tackle the Rochester winters.

Beanies and knit scarves:

If you ever want to enjoy the fresh snow outside or avoid the overcrowded tunnels on your way to class, these two are A MUST. Even though the walk is short, it gets cold quickly, and the wind does blow the cold air between our beautiful campus buildings.

Sweatpants from the bookstore:

Who doesn’t love sweatpants? The bookstore carries a wide variety of Naz sweats to show off your school spirit while staying nice and toasty around campus. You can even order them online through the bookstore website!

Nazareth travel mug and a Keurig or electric kettle:

While you’re checking out the sweats, take a look at all the coffee cups and travel mugs the bookstore has to use in your room or to keep your coffee (or tea) warm while walking around campus. You can avoid the Millie’s Cafe line and save your dining dollars and brew your favorite drinks from the comfort of your room to take with you to class!

Warm fuzzy slippers/cabin socks and an oversized fleece blanket:

The tunnels are fantastic ways to get to class without having to go outside, and let’s face it, when you have an 8AM class, it’s easier to slide into some slippers or moccasins and head through the tunnels to class. As someone who is ALWAYS cold, bundling up in blankets and cabin socks during the winter is an everyday thing. Nothing beats reading a textbook (or binge watching Netflix) under a cozy fleece throw blanket while wearing fuzzy socks.

Snow boots and a sled/snowboard/skis:

Sometimes the only option is to trudge through the snow to get around, and having a sturdy pair of boots will keep your feet warm and dry, making the trip a little less awful. Plus, if you can stand the cold, you can do exploring off campus and even participate in some winter fun, like sledding or renting snowshoes and skis from bikes@naz!

Car scraper and shovel:

Having a car on campus is awesome, but with car-on-campus capability comes great responsibility. Nothing is worse than having to clean off a snowy car with just your gloves on, so if you are a commuter or have a car on campus, having a shovel to dig out, and a scraper to get on the road faster than relying on your defroster.

No matter how much snow, sleet, or cold we get, Nazareth winters are always something to look forward to. Make sure you’re prepared for the rest of this winter, and each winter to come, so that you too can enjoy the season!
