Care packages are so fun to come by. Getting an email from Central Mail Services was always the highlight of my day (especially during midterms or finals week). When I first came to college, my family always asked me what things I wanted in my care packages, and I didn’t know what to say. I hope this list gives you a good idea of what you want to tell your family and friends to send you via mail.

1. Homemade cookies! I loved when I would open the box and immediately saw my favorite chocolate chip cookies. It really comforted me knowing they came right from home, made with love by my family. Homemade comfort goodies are perfect to snack on and share with friends.

2. Tissues and hand sanitizer. Seems sort of odd, but everyone could use some mini sized tissues and hand sanitizer bottlers to throw in their backpack during flu season (because unfortunately, sickness does travel quickly).

3. School Supplies. I use post-it notes every day, so I tend to run out fairly quickly. Other go-to supplies could be highlighters, index cards, pens/mechanical pencils, staples, sharpies, staple remover, tape, etc. These may seem random, but I assure you, you will run out. You may not find it worth the time to go on a Wegmans run for a pack of staples, so these are perfect for a random goodie in your care package.

4. Cards or card games. These are super fun to play with friends at dinner, after class, or at a game night. My favorites are Phase 10 and Uno, but you can do a lot with two decks of classic cards.

5. Fun items. My favorite thing to ask my family for was stickers for my computer and storage trunk. I never knew what kind of stickers they would pick out for me, so personalizing my stuff, even with stickers, made me happy because it came from my family and friends. Other fun items could be glow sticks (for events like Springfest with fireworks), nail polish, cards, a stress ball, a canvas painting with a quote, water balloons, face masks, gum, socks, a favorite magazine, etc.

6. Holiday themed items. If a holiday is approaching, definitely request some goodies that go along to celebrate. I remember getting candy corn in October, and turkey themed socks near Thanksgiving. It’s easy to find fun (but also functional) things in the $3 section of Target.

7. Snacks. This is the easiest item to make a student happy. I have a sweet tooth and loved getting snacks like raisinets and oreos, but chips or goldfish were just as good.

Themed care packages are also a fun surprise when they are opened. A “Sunshine Box” is a box filled with yellow snacks and goodies. Or if you know someone feeling blue, send them a “Blue Box” filled with blue snacks and goodies. The options are endless, and you can even put one together yourself to send to friends at other schools. Ultimately, imagination (and maybe some inspiration from Pinterest) is key to creating the best care package.
