COVID. The pandemic, the pon de replay, the pandemonia. You have been an experience for sure, one that I hope myself and others won’t ever have to experience again. You have hurt and devastated people, communities, and countries and I hope that one day they’ll be able to recover. This past year and a half have taught me so much, about myself, the people around me, and the world. By no means are you completely out of our lives yet, because you are still affecting so many people out there. You forced me and billions of other people to sit and take a pause, something most of us have never been able to do.

You came at a time where there was so much going on in terms of racial justice issues. You made people who normally turn a blind eye, or aren’t always aware of what’s going on in the world be forced to pay attention. Making them reflect on how they might have fallen short, and have them take the time to listen and learn and grow to become better individuals.

COVID, with you being a fairly new virus, you brought so much stress and anxiety into my life along with billions of others. Constantly stressing if my sore throat was one of the symptoms, or it was because I spent the day before scream-singing the lyrics to my favorite song in the car. With the unknown, the best way to tackle it is by being informed, which is something we weren’t at first. We didn’t know much about you, but once we did and once there were ways to stop the spread, that helped with some of my anxieties.

There has been so much headway with the vaccine coming out and that has brought things a little bit back to how they were before. But that doesn’t mean that you are completely gone. As I continue to do my part and take the necessary precautions, I can’t help but think of the day when you become a more treatable virus like the flu.

Today I bid you adieu, in knowing that we aren’t completely over, but hopefully, soon we will be.
